Have done two successive installs of XP and a problem
persists, i.e., user settings are not saved when system is
restarted. However, all SaveSettings and NoSaveSettings in
the registry are set properly, and install procedure
is "by the book."
On each restart I get the message " windows cannot
create a local profile and is logging you on with a
temporary profile. The profile will be deleted when you
log off. This may be caused by incorrect file system
permissions or network problems."
Currently using my Windows 98SE old reliable !
Thank you for any assistance with this problem.

sounds like a problem writing user accounts to the registry properly.
when you reinstalled windows, did you format the hdd?
if not try a defrag and a chkdsk /r
if you did then im thinking on shutdown your registry is not saved properly
try restarting in safemode a few times and see if it happens there
lastly it could be corrupt RAM modules causing this.

Hope this helps and best of luck mate

Repeating my original msg....first one was ignored.

Your original message was not necessarily "ignored". The people who were
reading the newsgroup at that moment just didn't have an answer for
you. If you've done a clean install twice (!!), then the probability
that this is a hardware issue is high. Test your hard drive and RAM.
For RAM testing, I like Memtest86 from www.memtest86.com - let the test
run for an extended (like overnight) period of time - unless errors are
seen immediately. Test the hard drive with a diagnostic utility from
the drive mftr. If you need more help, post back with details about
your system and what you've already done to troubleshoot.
