My desktop froze and soft restart didn't work so I had to power down. When I
rebooted I had the option of safe, safe with network, safe with command
prompt, last known config or start normally. I have tgried all of these with
no success. At one point I did manage (don't ask me how) to get to the C
prompt and windows or xp were not even in the directory, although from the
amount of space available everything seems to be there. I have a second hard
drive and all the directories seem to be in place. I have tried booting with
the CD (yes I changed the boot sequence) and that didn't work either.
Anyone any ideas? It is critical that I get this back today!

Thanks Will but I have already tried that, I can't even get into the command
prompt let alone booting from the XP CD., just a loop around the methods to
start.

Did you try a complete power-down (remove mains plug if not sure all power
is off)?

If booting from cd what happens exactly? If you have a boot floppy does it
boot from floppy?
