I have a new computer (Intel MB, P4, 2.4/800) when I try
to install XP, I get "Setup is inspecting your hardware
configuration" then the screen goes completely black and
nothing happens. The board has sound but I have a
Soundblaster card plugged in. Also AGP and a modem. What
can I do?

If you have installed a video card and sound card, then you need to
open the BIOS and disable your onboard video and onboard sound
or audio.

I am having the same problem. How would the average
computer user know how to do that on his or her own? I'm
totally lost.

The "average user" shouldn't be doing this stuff without help and/or
research before attempting it. It's like working on your car or building
your home from scratch - you sometimes need experts to help you - if
everyone knew how to do everything innately, then everyone would be really
bored.

When you turn on your computer, do you notice anything telling you "press XX
to enter system setup/BIOS"? Do that. Otherwise, you will have to refer to
your manuals and/or the manufacturer's web pages/support from the people you
bought the PC from.
