Hi,

I have a Win98 PC networked to an XP PC. Both are members of Workgroup
"WORKGROUP".

IP numbers are 192.168.0.1 & 192.168.0.2 with 24 bit subnets.

The Win98 can see all shares on itself and the XP box.

PROBLEM: XP machine cannot browse the network -- not even it's own shares
yet can ping the other PC. At 1st this was an intermittent problem but now
it has stopped working altogether.

Any ideas what the problem is?

Thanks,

Shawn

Shawn,

You can check to see if there is an issue with resolution of the machine
name by trying to open the file on the Windows 98 pc using the IP Address
I.e,

start.. run.. \\192.168.0.1 (assuming that is the ip address of the Windows
98 PC)

If you can then connect to the PC correctly, the problem is to do with
address resolution. A simple solution for this is to use HOSTS and LMHOSTS
files.

These file are located in the windows\system32\drivers\etc directory on
..Windows XP. You would need to edit both files (with notepad for example)
and add an entry to each along the lines of:

<ip_address> <machine_name>
e.g.
192.168.0.1 windows98

For more information on LMHOSTS files go to:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314108

You can then try gaining access to the Windows 98 PC:

start.. run.. \\windows98 (assuming that is the name of the Windows 98 PC)

This will not fix the browsing problem, but should allow you access to the
Windows 98 PC. The browsing problem can be rather more complicated so try
this first.
