When turning on the computer, I get the message.. sync out of range... then
it says, drive not ready.. system haulted. How in the world can I fix this
issue? Its on our desktop computer (Compaq Presario with xp home) and has
school files we need before the end of the term in a couple weeks. Any help
would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I think you have some major issues.
The sync out of range is your video card saying it wants to send some
frequency to your monitor but if it does it may cause damage, so it's warning
you the video card is haiving issues.
The other drive not ready, could mean your hard drive has died, I suggest
you take it to a local repair shop for professional help.

Shelley, you could try on next startup to Tap F8 until you get a menu.
Select Safe Mode. If WinXP boots up in safe mode
rt click on Desktop and select Properties>Settings. Lower the Screen
Resolution if you have to. Check here

If you are still getting the message drive not ready....system haulted
you could run a diagnostic check on your hard drive..
Most manufacturers have free ones available at their websites.
