XP won't boot from CD

My DVD burner (Benq 400a) was having trouble and I downloaded and ran a firmware upgrade which crashed my computer. I'm running Windows XP Pro.
When I boot I get the "Windows did not start successfully screen". I tried all options with no success. It starts loading drivers for Safe Mode but freezes up after a couple dozen load. I changed the bios to boot from CD. I put in my retail XP install disk and restart and then "press any key to boot from CD" but then just get sent back to the "Windows did not start successfully screen" and its Safe Mode and Start Normally options - none of which do a thing.

I've read all the similar "XP won't boot" replies in the forum and have read "How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install" but am still stuck since the PC won't even get to the Windows Setup screen on CD boot. I even tried booting using an XP Home disk I had from another computer but the same sequence of events happens.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Have you tried booting into safe Mode ?

Hit F8 while booting. You can try a Restore to a point before the problem
started.

Usual thing to do would be to start removing hardware until the machine
starts behaving. Alternatively strip everything out to the bare bones
and start adding components until it fails.

I'd start with that DVD burner!

Thanks Peter. Disconnected the DVD burner and was able to boot from the CD. You folks are great!
