For no apparent reason some of the XP Pro workstations on my network stopped
being able to obtain a DHCP address from my router? Two computers conintue
to have no problem, while three will not work. If I provide a static IP
address all is well, so it is DHCP. I also have Norton Security on the
machines and have uninstalled it which changed nothing.

Any suggestions or known issues?

Hi Sondra,
Did you try to release the IP address and renew it again may be your PCs
holding the IP address for longe time,if I'm you I will check the event
viewer for any DHCP error and try to troubleshoot from there, and try to
uncheck the DHCP in Wins in the IP properties and check it again then reboot
and see.

Try this link; http://support.microsof.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;238135
I hope this will be useful to you

The workstation gets an internal 169 address assigned since no DHCP server is
available - that's the error.

of course it will give you the APIPA since there 're no DHCP available it
will give you the IP address 169.254.x.x, did you try to flush the IP address
and renew all,try this go to the command prompt and type
ipconfig/release_all, then type enter,then ipconfig/renew_all,and also after
close all opened applications power down the router for 30 seconds or so,and
try to ping the router or the DHCP host and tracert ,route print to clear the
problem .
good luck

Turn off all the computers. Pull the power plug on the router for a minute
or so. Plug in the router. This will clear any router errors. Now boot up
each computer in succession.
