Any advice for this: when attempting to install Window Updates, the HDD
just hangs - the 1gb RAM is totally overwhlemed!

Are you using a legitimate copy of XP?

If not, then that's probably why the updates won't install.

If you do have a legitimate copy, try setting the option in Automatic
Updates in the Control Panel that allows the computer to download the updates
when you give the go-ahead. Then when they're downloaded XP asks you to give
the OK to install them.

How do you know the 1GB is totally overwhelmed. Where are you seeing this.
If you do ctrl + alt + del it brings up the task manager. Have a look at the
processes tab. This will give you the programs and how much memory each is
using. Which program is using the most ram. Can you install any updates.
Have you tried individually. Does just one update cause the problem or each
one if you try them individually.

Post to the Windows update newsgroup and give more details. Saying the
ram is totally overwhelmed makes no sense.
