XP windows professional wont start - keeps saying hard/soft ware p

I'm running Win XP Professional. Last night McAffee did automatically
download an update and this seemed to be fine. I did not install any other
software or hardware. I went to shut down the computer and nothing seemed to
happen. I attempted to click on shutdown again. The computer rebooted and
then the black screen came up and said that "windows did not start
successfully due to new hardware or software"

I have tried safe mode and all of the other modes it offers. I get the same
result...it looks as though windows might be loading, then it just reboots
and gives me the same page offering all the modes.
PLEASE HELP

See if you can get to the Safe Mode , command prompt only...
