When I copy a 4.3 Gigabyte file from my DVD-r disc to my
Maxtor hard disk via windows explorer, I get the progress
bar showing it will take 25 minutes. After about 80%
complete shown on the progress bar, the progress bar shows
that it will take about 60 minutes and then continues to
add more minutes as it nears completion.

I have XP professional with all updates, athlon xp2000+,
384 pc133 memory, 40 gig hard drive with 14 gigs available
space. The file is one MPEG2 data file that took about 30
minutes to burn onto the data dvd. I don't have a problem
copying a similar data file at 2 Gig size.

Is the copy slowing down to a crawl because of some
hardware problem or is the progress bar just showing me
incorrect copying time? I know Windows 2000 OS had a
problem with showing incorrect copying time.

Is the hard disk by any chance formatted in FAT 32? - that has an
absolute upper limit of 4GB for the size of a file. Though I would have
expected things to tell you.

Thanks guys. I did leave the copy function going with no movement of
the mouse, etc. Here’s what I observed: progress bar starts
and says 25 min. to complete, the DVD drive’s green light is on
constantly while copying, at about 1min. left the progress bar starts
to fluctuates up and down to 5, 10, 25, 30, 60 minutes and the DVD
drive’s green light starts to flutter and no longer stays on
constantly while the HDD led light begins to work a bit more, I let it
run it’s course and after close to an hour this message appears
“Cannot copy homevideo1 data (cyclic redundancy check)”, I
click the ok button and message disappears- copying failed.

I just did a similar file that was 3.9 Gigs and it copied over without
a flaw.

I’ll try and defrag my hard drive and try again. I’m
wondering if there is a copying limit size in XP? I also notice that
properties of my HDD shows that I’m FAT32. My DVD drive is a
pioneer 105.
