when booting this message occurs:
window\system32\config\system---file is either missing or
corrupt. repair by starting windows setup using the
original setup cd-rom.. (no cd--windows came installed)
what should I do to resolve--help would be greatly
appreciated.

where can I get the cd (original setup for winxp???}
evidently I will still need it even if I follow 307545.

but then I lose all data, if I use system restore--anyway
to avoid that?????Have backed it up, but not in the last
two weeks.

my dad has a compaq presario windows xp home edition . it needs a complete
rebooting. we can not find the master restore cd. did it come with one ?

you can still reach the Recovery Console through creating setup
disks:-http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q310994

You should have gotten a OEM XP CD. If you installed something, try System
Restore.

Now how is the OP supposed to use system restore when they can't boot
their system? That's what this message means.
