No one is going to take it away from you. If you mean can you remove
Vista and install XP, it will depend on whether the hardware on the new
computer is made only for Vista or not.

Assuming it comes preloaded with Vista, no. At least not easily. You'd
have to buy an XP disk (full or OEM), wipe Vista and install XP. And
you'd have to make sure that you have XP drivers for the chipset,
video, etc, etc. FAR more trouble than it's worth.

You may find it easier and less time consuming to adapt to Vista than to
travel along the downgrade path.

Forget the negative things that you have heard about Vista, and judge it on
its own merits..

Unless of course you're one of those who have hardware and software that
won't run on Vista and refuse to purchase all new just to use an OS that
doesn't offer any better productivity than XP.

Which are?

I think that's why she wants to stay with XP. ;-)

There are other considerations if you're thinking Vista:

(rant-n-rave on)

1) If you are a PC gamer and have loads of WinXP games, do NOT use Vista

2) Vista has some real annoying features, especially the @!#!!@ Vista User
Account Control

3) The biggest, is Microdunce deciding NOT to make Vista compatible with
WinXP drivers

(rant-n-rave off)

Additional comment:

A very long time ago I was asking a Software Engineer at Unisys about
Unix. The one thing that really stuck in my mind was that Unix *built
drivers* when installed. In other words, Unix did not have driver
problems because the actual driver file was built (compiled) by Unix on
installation.

IF this is true, one has to wonder why Microsoft does not use the same
scheme thereby Windows would not have driver problems UNLESS the
driver-supplier provided a faulty source-code. In that case the driver
install would fail with a msg that had enough info to pass back to the
driver-supplier.

My XP games work well with Vista

User Account Control can be tamed with TweakUAC

Hardware manufacturers choose whether to make drivers available for their
own products..

You've got it backwards. Driver authors make their software to be compatible
with the OS, not the other way around.
