I recently installed XP Home on an a Compaq 5360. I got it all installed and
running but the USB drives (two in back and two in front) don't work. When I
look at the device manager it says that they are all working fine. But, when
I plug in a USB device it doesn't recognize it. It will show up that there
is something in the drive but it cannot activate it. Any suggestions?

a) Were those USB devices working before XP home installed?
b) Have you tried other USB devices (of any sort)?

My USB Microsft Mouse doesn't work either. And yes, the USBs were working
before I installed XP. In fact, I installed XP a couple of times before it
got working (long story) and the USB mouse worked everytime before.

Compaqs are notorious for having proprietary hardware that requires
proprietary software. Go to the HP/Compaq tech support website for your
specific model Compaq. Download all drivers, including the motherboard
drivers that will support your USB ports, as well as any special Compaq
software, available for the XP operating system. If there are no
drivers available for XP for your model, then XP is not supported on
that computer. Either restore back to the original operating system
that came preinstalled on the computer or purchase a third-party PCI
USB controller card.

Try upgrading the BIOS from the HP/Compaq website. This solution worked for
me. I have a Toshiba notebook and I had the same issue of non-functioning
devices through the USB ports (4) on my unit. Toshiba knew exactlly what the
issue was an we went from Phoenix LTD BIOS v1.2.0 to Phoenix ACPI Flash BIOS
version 1.8 via a quick download, install, and reboot.
Good luck
