i have windows 98se and would like to upgrade to
windowsXP. What would be the best option either use XP
upgrade on format my hard drive and clean install a XP?

Hi Gray,

It may start a war but, I think you are best off with a clean install. The
vast majority of the problems I see posted to the help groups seem to be
directly related to remnants of an old OS. You bought a new OS, why not give
it a fair chance to do what it's supposed to do?

Make sure your hardware is compatable before you install.

I recently upgraded, and bought an upgrade version of XP. I tried to install
it from dos, having booted with a floppy. It said that it could not be run
from dos mode, so I installed a clean Windows ME from dos mode and then put
XP on top (from within ME). My point is, how is it possible to do a clean
install - can you boot from the CD (including the upgrade version CD)?

You can boot from and official XP CD.

Although many people will tell you that formatting and installing
cleanly is the best way to go, I disagree. Unlike with previous
versions of Windows, and upgrade to XP replaces almost
everything, and usually works very well.

My recommendation is to at least try the upgrade, since it's much
easier than a clean installation. You can always change your mind
and reinstall cleanly if problems develop.

Yes, that's the correct way to install--boot from the CD.
