My college age daughter bought a new desktop PC and I am going to take her
laptop. It is about 2 yrs old and run on MS-ME. It is pretty well infected
from cruising all the internet sites that like to invade your machines. I
have a licensed copy of XP that I want to install on the laptop wiping out
ME. What is the best way to do this? Is there a link that has information on
a full HD format/ install/upgrade?

Thanks...

Pretty straightforward. Start windows, put in the cd, choose "New
Installation" from the dropbox on the first screen.

Will this wipe out and format the drive? I want to start from scratch like a
new HD.

No, but if you boot to setup CD, and chose Advanced setup, you get a
checkbox for choosing the drive and partitioning it. Remove, and recreate
the partition.

If not possible, boot to cd and recovery console, and use DISKPART to remove
and create a partition, then boot to cd and run setup.

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Have you made sure that the laptop's hardware components are
capable of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:
(http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective or substandard
hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will
still support Win9x.

If the machine "eaten up with viruses" I'm not sure I'd upgrade. A clean
install might be a better option especially if you are having problems with
the OS.
Just my opinion....
