After completing upgrade to XP (from Windows ME) all seems fine until I attempt to get on internet (dial-up modem).
Receive 2 Messages:
1st Message: Generic Host for Win32 Service has encountered a problem and needs to close.
(something about svchost server & unix system)? - OK
2nd Message: RPC Shutdown activated through the Windows NT Authority\System - Shutdown occurs within 30 seconds.

This totally shutsdowns the ssystem - how can I isolate the problem?

I think you need to checkout the blaster worm virus sounds like you have it.

Bradley:
Sounds like the Blaster worm. Check this link...

Greetings --

If you connected the PC to the Internet without having first
enabled a firewall, without having first installed an antivirus
application with current virus definition files, and before installing
the KB824146 Hotfix, you're very likely to get infected from any of
the thousands of PCs on the Internet that are constantly broadcasting
the Blaster and/or Welchia worms. It only takes a few seconds of
exposure.

To stay on-line long enough to get the necessary updates, patches,
and removal tools, click Start > Run, and enter "shutdown -a" when the
next RPC countdown begins. This will abort the shut down. Also, make
sure you've enabled a firewall before starting, to preclude any more
intrusions while getting the updates/patches/tools.

Help us help you:

You can have peace. Or you can have freedom. Don't ever count on
having both at once. -- RAH

Here's how you can solve both problems:
The second problem has to do with the widespread worm that came out last
September. In order to turn it off, start up your computer and hit
ctrl+alt+delete and shut down the msblast.exe process. Also, delete the
msblast.exe file in the system folder (or system32). When this is done,
delete the registry key (do a search for msblast). Restart your computer,
turn on your Internet Connection Firewall and go to Windows Update. There
might be an update to problem #1 on there also.
