Hi,
I currently have a 98SE,p3, 600Mhz machine that I'd like
to upgrade to Windows XP.

98SE is incompatible with Visual Basic.NET and unstable
with my engineering applications(Protel 99SE, 3D CAD,
Visual Basic, AutoCAD, Code Warrior, etc...).

1. Will it require reformatting my hardrive?

2. If so, I assume I'll have to back up my hardrive and
re-install all my apps.

3. Or, does the XP installation perform a miracle and
manage these headaches for me?

Any suggestions or tips are appreciated.

Regards

If you want your puter running primo, a fresh install is
a world better. You'll have a ton of junk you dont need
floating around otherwise.

Be sure that RAM is adequate - I would not think of using under 256MB
with such applications, and 512 would be better

There are certain things you should uninstall to clear out of the way -
AntiVirus; any System utility suites like Norton, and any CD Burning
software - then install again after in XP compatible versions. Read
Gary Woodruff's article on upgrading to XP at
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm

One point that is now important is to then activate the XP Firewall
*before* going on the net at all: At Control Panel - Network
Connections, r-click the connection used, Properties and check it on the
Advanced page. Otherwise you are likely to be hit by the Blast worm
within minutes of connecting

THen (presuming you use a CD that includes Service Pack 1) start by
going to Windows update and get critical update 826939 - which rolls up
fixes for security, and will in the process download anything up to 40
MB of patches.

I just completed an upgrade from WinME (itself an upgrade from Win98) using
WinXP Home, on a 500 MHz P3. It seems to have been completely successful,
though not completely easy. My computer used to crash four or five times a
day - since the upgrade, it hums along beautifully.

1) I did back up my data files to be safe, but, in fact, there was no damage
to any of my data files as far as I can ascertain.
2) I didn't reformat my drives (FAT32) and everything went OK. I have just
converted them to NTFS format using the covert command, and that seems to
have gone fine as well.
3) The upgrade took an unbelievably long time - I would say 12 - 18 hours,
not including messing around to get over the stalls before I did 4 and 5
below.
4) The chief things to remember are to unplug all external devices such as
printers and scanners, and uninstall software which the upgrade analysis
report that XP generates says it doesn't recognize or can't work with etc.
etc.
5) I found that the upgrade stalled till I did (4) and also a clean boot of
WinME to turn off everything except the core hardware and firmware. The
following locations can help

http://support.microsoft.com/default/.aspx?scid=kb;en=us;310064

(310064 is the trouble shooting note)

and

http://support.microsoft.com/default/.aspx?scid=kb;en=us;192926

This tells you how to do a clean boot, which I found was necessary with my
WinME system. You can do the same for Win98.

6) The only real surprise was that I needed to reinstall Norton Internet
Security - everything else seems t work fine.

Hi all,
Well ... I did it. The actual upgrade went smoothly. I
used the links PA Bear gave me to prepare:

XP Readiness Test
http://www.pcpitstop.com/xpready/

Upgrading to WinXP
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm

In all, it took about 16 hrs:
Preparation 8hrs.
Install 4hrs.
Troubleshoot 8hrs.

My chief problem was LAN setup:

I have a 3 computer network with ME, 98SE, and my new, XP
OS. I used a program on the ME machine called Ethereal
to help diagnose the problems.

I couldn't ping the ME machine, but it showed up as a
Work Group Computer. Ethereal showed my ping making it
to the ME machine, but it wouldn't respond. Turns out it
had a Norton Firewall blocking my XP machine.

I successfully pinged the 98SE machine, but couldn't see
it as one of my Work Group Computers. This boiled down
to setting the TCP/IP > Advanced >Bindings setting on the
98SE machine. Check the File and Printer Sharing box.

Also, printing was slow to a networked HP Design Jet
600. I downloaded and installed the XP driver from the
HP website.

Thanks again,
Steve
