I want to install XP on a 2000 machine. Will I loose all of my installed
programs and data?

You shouldn't but shit happens so I would back up the data if I were you.

Probably not if you do an upgrade install, although it would be extremely
foolish not to back up your data first. You will need to upgrade to XP Pro.
If you want to install XP Home and need to do a clean install, of course
everything from the previous operating system will be gone.

Make sure that your computer meets system requirements and that you have
drivers for all your hardware.

If you do a clean installation, yes. If you do an upgrade, no.

Bear in mind, that from Windows 2000, you can do an upgrade to XP
Professional, but not XP Home. Also bear in mind that retail versions
(either Full or Upgrade) can do upgrades, but OEM versions can not.

Also note that doing an upgrade is a big step, and there are no
guarantees that it always works perfectly. However unlikely, it's
always possible that something might go wrong. For that reason it's
prudent to be sure you have a backup of anything you can't afford to
lose before beginning.

If you do a clean install, yes, you will LOSE all of that. Backup
your data before proceeding.

If you do an upgrade, you still might LOSE all/some of it if something
goes wrong, so backup everything, just in case.
