Joe

I have received this email from one of our Senior Organisation Members and I
don't know the answer to it.

" Every time I turn the computer off it says that it is adding updates (10)
so don't switch it off. It goes through the procedure indicating update 1
of 10, 2 of 10 etc. In due course it switches off. If I switch it on again
and switch it off shortly after I get the same message and procedure.
Obviously the updates are not working for some reason. Any suggestions. "

They are using a legal copy of windows XP and although it's not stated I
would assume XP Home

Can anyone assist please.

Have them visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan for updates -
check all critical ones (excluding perhaps Internet Explorer 7.0) and write
down all KB###### for them and get them to you and try to install them from
there after they do get them to you. Reboot after they do that and have
them revisit that site and scan again. If it still needs those same ones -
let us know which ones are not working.

Joe if this continues as a problem they or you should post this to the
experts in the Windows Update newsgroup.

Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder - this will get rid of any updates that have
downloaded

Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder: a. Click Start, click Run, type
%systemroot%, and then click OK.
b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.
c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this folder.

Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

You'll lose the history but that's not important. If everything is okay and things a
proceeding normally you can delete the renamed folder.

Now revisit the WU site manually and check for updates that are needed.

Also suggest running - Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/tools/mbsa2/default.mspx

This will check that all updates are installed and if any updates are missing.
