i have on XP? Or will they be saved on my hardrive, and pop back up on Vista?

You should always backup your system, especially your data files, pictures,
music, etc. before installing a new operating system. This type of install
is a major overhaul for your computer, there's no guarantee it will go
smooth or without incident. The installation could halt or crash and you
might end up losing everything.

Further, you question inplies you don't back up regularly. Basically, your
applications shouldn't need backing up as long as you have the media on
which they came for reinstall. But any files you create, download, etc.
should always be backed up to protect against loss if hardware fails, you
get a virus, all manner of possibilities.

To answer your question directly, assuming a smooth install without
incident, everything should be there on Vista that was there previously if
you are doing an upgrade over your previous OS.

Did you run the upgrade advisor to find out if you have any applications or
hardware that may not be compatible? If yes, have you checked for updated
drivers for your hardware which may be compatible but my not work properly
under Vista without the proper drivers? Did you check for updates for your
applications that may be necessary to help them run under Vista?

It's always best to do backups before any major upgrade - period.

Please define "pop back up". That's a computer term I'm not familiar with.

Doris Honey,

You need to get off the computer and come in the Kitchen. The kids are
hungry, the laundry needs doing, I am horny, and the dog needs to be taken
for a walk. All you do is spend time on the computer.

Your loving Husband

No wonder you are named so aptly "Spanky de Monkey" If your wife spends
all her time on the computer. ;)

Hi Doris! :)

No matter what anyone tells you, any time you make changes to your system
you should always have a backup of ANY data you consider valuable.

In the case of upgrading the OS, well, if you don't backup your data
you're really asking for trouble. What are you going to do if the upgrade
fails or doesn't migrate your settings?
