Hi all
I need a little help troubleshooting my XP-98 network. At least, it will be a network when it works
I had 2 Win98 machines I had managed to get talking to each other over a crossover cable--I used computer 2 as backup for some files from computer 1. Basically enabled file & print sharing. They are both running Win 98 first edition. There has never been a need to upgrade to the 2nd edition
Now I have a new XP machine at SP1 and current on all critical updates. I ran the ICS wizard but results were a mess and I rolled back the XP machine to the previous recovery point. What happened was the 98 machine knew there was a network and could see itself and its printer in Explorer under Network Neighborhood or whatever it's called there, only it did not see the XP box. The XP machine only saw the name of the nework and when I tried to explore it XP threw off an error message asserting it did not have sufficient rights to the network. Everything I did under an account I created and named "Admin" with administrative rights
I do not need ICS at all. Only the XP machine will normally use Internet. If Win98 machine ever needs to for some reason, I will just switch the phone jack as needed. Today I use both machines to connect to Internet by this simple method. What I want to do is pull over files from old to new machine, then format C: and do a clean reinstall of Win 98 on the old machine, reestablish network connectivity, and again use the older machine as a backup for the new. It has the printer connected to it using the original Win98 drivers so I may keep it to use as a print server as well
So here I am, and finding a lot of confusing and even conflicting advice on the Internet. Then I remembered that you all are here, and are my best hope for getting this done right. Can anyone offer suggestions of settings to check, or web pages to consult, or KB articles that might address this subject
Thank you.
