What do I need to do to convert my Dell laptop from XP to
a copy (legal) of 2000 Pro that I love??? How involved is
it to do?

Hi, Bruce.

Why go to a lot of trouble to retreat, when it's a lot easier to advance?

Seems to me you have 3 basic options:

1. Retreat to Win2K - Ted has told you how to do this.

2. Climb the learning curve now to get comfy with WinXP. (After just one
week with WinXP a couple of years ago, I'd never voluntarily go back to a
previous version of Windows, not even to Win2K, which would be my second
choice.)

3. Configure your copy of WinXP to look like the Win2K you are familiar
with. Climb the learning curve later, whenever you are ready. Other users
can tell you how to restore the Classic menu and other steps to switch to
the Win2K interface; I've never learned those steps because I'm happy with
(most of) the new features.

Use the 2000 CD to to delete the XP partition, then format it again, and install the 2000 OS. Keep in mind, that, you'll for sure, lose your warranty on the laptop, if you do so.

Greetings --

If you want to replace WinXP with an earlier OS, you're certainly
entitled to do so, as long as you've purchased a legitimate copy of
that earlier OS.

Before proceeding, though, you'd better take a few minutes to see
if there are any device drivers for the older OS available for the new
machine. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed by its
manufacturer for WinXP. Also, check with the PC vendor to determine
whether or not replacing the pre-installed OS will void your warranty
and/or any service agreement(s), as normally the case.

To replace WinXP with an earlier OS, you'll have to boot from the
appropriate boot disk, format the hard drive, and install. There is
no supported downgrade path or technique.

You can't convert; downgrades are not possible. The only way to
do this is to reformat and clean install Windows 2000.

Three points to bear in mind:

1. You may void your warrantee by doing this.

2. You may have trouble finding drivers you need.

3. If you're new to XP, if you would give yourself some time and
learn to use it, my guess is that you end up loving it more than
2000.
