After booting from the cd, i only get a choice of partitions to install xp,
and as i do not have enough free space on any partition to install xp, i cant
even get to the welcome to setup screen to boot the recovery console. what
should i do?

Are you sure youre booting to the xp cd,you should get about 1 min.of loading
drivers, etc.,then you should get the option of installing xp,or pressing R
for
recovery.Make sure the BIOS is set to load the cdrom with xp cd, as 1st
priority device.Once in recovery,press enter for password,then type:DiskPart
In DiskPart, delete unwanted partitions as needed.

Absolutely. I am on a friend's comp right now and have checked the cd i used
to boot my comp. I do get the loading drivers and etc, but I only get an
option to select a partition on c: to install to. Is there the equivalent of
a windows boot disk I could use to access my files? should i install an older
os and just backup and format? Anything to help would be appreciated
