XP will be around for years. A lot of businesses still use Windows 2000.

NOBODY can FORCE you to do anything you don't want to. First, you
must buy Vista, you can't just upgrade to it on-line, so the
decision to buy is entirely yours. Second, even 10 years from now,
your current PC is likely to at least run, even if MS has stopped
supporting it for bugs or even security fixes. I don't know if
there will be an XP SP3, seems unlikely, though. And, wrt updates
of all kinds, including IE7, I have my system set to "notify me but
do not download or install." I will NOT allow ANY software app or
O/S to self-download and install anything, including the software
that goes with my HW. The simple reason is that not all updates are
good, some introduce heinous problems, and I like to lurk in places
like this and observe what the early adopters see.

I assume YOU set a System Restore Point before allowing ANY
installs. If not, then you are inviting a visit from Murphy. Some
updates can be uninstalled, others cannot. And, I would highly
encourage you to invest $100 in a good imager such as Acronis True
Image and create full image backups of your C:\ drive to guard
against a HD crash or malware. And, buy yourself a 200 gig external
HD to back up the images and your data to and store it in a safe
place.

You're welcome. Couple old saws for you: "if it ain't broke,
don't try to fix it" and "never give Murphy an even break". These
two sayings/watchwords have saved me more hours or days of grief
than you can possibly imagine. Let me give a brief run-down of
what I do to protect myself and backup my two systems:

About every 4-8 weeks, I run full virus and malware scans using
NAV 2006, Ad-Aware, and Spy Bot Search & Destroy on both systems
first. No sense proceeding if I'm infected. Then, I run Acronis
True Image 9.0 (latest version is 10) on both systemss, then run
backups of mine and my wife's E-mail folders and backup our IE
favorites, and then use the Files and Transfer Wizard to save our
preferences. Finally, I copy ALL data files - not the Windows
stuff - to a separate USB external HD, take it to my bank's
safety deposit box and exchange it for the one in there with the
previous full backup set on it. Thus, if we have a fire or theft
or some natural disaster that takes out all of my optical discs
and destroys my HDs and my entire network, I am never more than
4-8 weeks out of whack. And, in between, I keep reasonably
current on the external stored off the floor in my basement,
hopefully free of water damage.

Some would say this is overkill or I am paranoid for no reason.
But, a full nuke and reinstall in a WEEK or more job for me, plus
the irrevocable loss of all my data. Finally, most people do not
start a regular back-up regimen until AFTER they've had a HD
crash or some other Murphy attack. Hope you're using yours
wisely. Good luck.

Nobody ever forces you to change to anything. It's your own choice.

will they
still keep it updated

Mainstream support ends in 2009, extended support not until 2014.

and will service pack 3 ever come out now they
are pushing Vista {Many thanks}

SP3 is planned (not guranteed) for first half of 2008.

You're welcome. Glad to help.

Windows XP is now six years old. You want to run it until it's 13? Your
choice of course, but I would almost be willing to bet that sometime within
that next seven years you will change your mind--mostly likely because you
will want to acquire some piece of hardware or software that won't work with
Windows XP, and requires Vista (or even possibly Vista's successor).

Thirteen years is an enormous length of time when it comes to computers. I
wouldn't want to be running 1994's software and peripheral devices today.

Chance is that we who are happy with XP will be able to do what we
want for longer than that.

Today's computers are more capable than most users need.

Thanks for all your replies i run a garage and run software to dea
with Data specs and technical data for my work now they are all up an
running well i would like to leave well alone IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'
FIX IT as we say in the trade once again many thanks for all you
advice {must say very useful site

And another good saying is 'Look before you leap' ie never use full
automatic updates especially from MS. You can and most lively will get
burned a few times. I have.
