I just installed a WI-Fi card in my laptop. Subsequently the startup /login
screens and shutdown dialog looks more like Windows 2000. How to I get it to
look more like Windows XPPro again?

Go to Control Panel and double click User Accounts.
Click on "Change the way users log on or off".
Put a check mark in the box next to "Use the Welcome Screen".
Note: If an error message is displayed about "Client Service
for Netware", skip to the next paragraph.
Do the same for "Fast User Switching" if you want to enable
this feature.
Hit the Apply Options button.
Close User Accounts.
Restart your computer to see if the Welcome Screen is
displayed.

There's a possibility that when you installed your wireless
card the Client Service for Netware was installed as well. This
would cause the problems you're experiencing. Take a look at
these two articles for info on how to uninstall this client.

Remove the Novell Client from Windows NT/2000/XP
