Fred,

Does the Windows 98 computer have File and Print Sharing installed? Does it
have folders actually shared?

If no help yet, provide ipconfig information for each computer, and we'll
enumerate the problem.
Start - Run - "cmd" - Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window. Open Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is NOT checked!, open
file c:\ipconfig.txt, copy and paste entire contents into your next post.
Identify operating system (by name, version, and SP level) with each ipconfig
listing.

I didn't see your initial discussion

fwiw
here a box full of 98 has net bieu installed and of course the same
GroupName as XP/

XP tcp/ip properties advanced .. the Wins tab has the check on
default NetBios wont work on the enable or disabled buttons only
default netbios. Then they talk fine.

Try a third party firewall such as Zonealarm from zonelabs. Then switch off
the xp one. The windows xp firewall seems pretty useless

This is the Ip info
I know it says Net Bios disabled but i have the enabled button selected on
the Wins tab, I just changed it from "default" and retarted the computer

Fred,

Ldesk has Teredo Tunneling, aka IPV6. Do you need access to IPV6 addresses?

Please start by un installing IPV6, aka Advanced Networking, from the list of
items under Local Area Connection Properties. You only need the following items
in the list:
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler (optional)
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

If you need IPV6, you can install it later. After you get file sharing working.

Fred,

Is File and Print Sharing, and NetBIOS Over TCP/IP, loaded on Base2? Do you
have shares setup? Is Client for Microsoft Networks, and NetBIOS Over TCP/IP,
loaded on LDesk?

Let's enumerate the symptoms, if all of the above is done. Take the following
code (everything inside the "#####").

Open Notepad. Ensure that Format - Word Wrap is not checked. Highlight then
Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and Paste (Ctrl-V) into
Notepad. Verify, and correct, names and addresses if necessary.
Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd" (on LDesk), or "cdiag.bat" (on Base2), as
type "All Files", into the root folder "C:\".
Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
Wait patiently.
When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and ensure
that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A Ctrl-C)
and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from all computers, please, with all computers powered up and online.

Coming in at the middle of this but do you, by chance, have TCP/IP only on
the XP machine and NETBEUI or other also available on the 98 machine? If so,
remove the others from the 98 machine.

It works!!
There are three prototcols on the 98 NetBEUI, TCP/IP and IPX/SPX. When I
tried removing some extra ones 98 stopped seeing the network. After I
reinstalled I looked at the settings for IPX/SPX and checked the NETBIOS box.
I had the TCP/IP set as the default, so I don't know why it makes a
difference.

I actually learned quite a bit on this site and want to thank everyone for
thier help.
