Whose laptop? What model? What options are part of that
machine? XP Home or XP Professional? What is it connected
to? Few will or will want to provide useful answers if you
cannot first provide simple technical details.

In addittion to what else was mentioned.
Turn off the Indexing Service.

Start | Run | Type services.msc | OK |
Scroll down to and double click: Indexing Service |
Click the Stop button | In the Startup Type field,
select Disabled | Apply | OK
After you restart your machine it will stay disabled.

[[Indexing Service
This service always has been a major resource hog. I NEVER recommend having
this service enabled. Remove the function via the "Add / Remove Programs"
icon in the control panel (Windows Setup Programs). It uses about 500 K to 2
MB in an idle state, not to mention the amount of memory and CPU resources
it takes to INDEX the drives. I have had people (and witnessed it on other
people's computers) report to me that the Indexing Service sometimes starts
up EVEN while the system is NOT idle... as in the middle of a game. You may
feel, as I do, that this is unacceptable. If your computer suddenly seems
"sluggish," Indexing Service is usually the cause of it.]]

Open the System Configuration Utility to see how many programs startup when
you boot.
Start | Run | Type: msconfig | OK |
Click the Startup tab

Why turn off indexing. is'nt indexing supposed to make searches faster? or
am i misunderstanding indexing? Loren Enjoy you life you only get One

The indexing service creates indexes (indicies?) of the contents and
properties of documents. Many people don't need to search based on contents
and properties, and the indexing service consumes a lot of CPU, which tends
to slow a computer's performance.

Indexing Service
[[Indexes contents and properties of files on local and remote computers;
provides rapid access to files through flexible querying language.
What Microsoft said above. What they don't say is that this service tends to
run amok, indexing far more than necessary and starting without warning. For
the benefit it provides, the resource usage is far from an equal tradeoff.]]

I had the same problem with a HP zt1180 laptop (P3/1200M, 512 MB) I bought 2
years ago. It slowed down suddenly and inexplicably several days after I
got it. Nothing helped.

I finally reloaded the OS to a freshly formatted HD, and performance has
been MUCH better ever since.

You verified the cooling fan is working? After all, Intel
CPUs never burn up from overheating. They simply slow down to
protect themselves. Computer acts like a dog because it is
protecting itself.

Just one of maybe a thousand reasons why system has failed.
You are still rationing facts. Libretto, TE-Series, Satellite
- which type of Toshiba? How about some operational details
such as disk constantly thrashing? Did you run the
comprehensive manufacturer's hardware diagnostics? What did
event log report? What does device manager report? What
processes are consuming high CPU time in the Task manager?
Again, you responses up to now are only wild speculation
because you want us to read your mind.
