In other version of Windows I was able to hit f8 before the computer boot
and was able to do a step by step boot. Is there any way of doing this in
XP?

This is fine, but the problem is when loading safemode it loads AGP.sys and
fails on loading this file.
SO I can not boot with safe mode at all

Be patient... When booting in Safe Mode, for me anyway, the system seems to
hang on the AGP.sys file, too. But given time, it loads. When first booting
all the files scroll by so fast and then it stops - so it seems as if it
won't load, but it does. It's taken upwards of 3 to 4 minutes but in the
end, I can usually get in.

AGPCPQ.sys is where safe mode stops for awhile
Letting it sit there for a while and will see what happens
thanks
