XP statup problems

I seem to be having a problem when I start up. My windows audio turns itself
off and my desktop keeps going between standard and classic mode. Has anyone
had this problem before or have any idea how I might solve this?

All i can think of , is that there is some type of malicious program on
there instructing the operating system to do this.

I have already ran spyware doctor, Avast virus checker, error doctor and the
Trendmicro free online virus scan and everything seems fine.
Do you have any other suggestions?
