Can you start in safe mode? If so:

If not, provide more detailed info: how far in the boot process it gets,
any error messages, etc.

I would disconnect all peripherals first & then try to start. I had the same
thing happen to my wife's eMachine in September. I immediately jumped to the
conclusion (being an eMachine) that it must be a bad power supply or mother
board. One of the experts on one of these newsgroups recommended this basic
troubleshooting process. It ended up being a flakey external USB hub. Newer
systems have a safeguard built in that shuts the system down if a voltage
spike is detected. My wife had reported a strange Windows message saying
something about to that for this USB hub & shut it down. I didn't really pay
attention to it since it had not returned.
If the computer boots without anything connected, add devices one by one
until it chokes again. If it won't start with all the peripherals removed,
you could do the same with any cards attached to the motherboard. It depends
how technically inclined you are.

Does XP even start to load before it shuts down? Do
the normal BIOS screens show?
