We have a HP computer that came with XP Home installed. It will not boot up because of some bad files. The error message is 'A disk error occurred.' I tried to re-start the recovery process but a blue screen error came up about a protection fault. What can I do?

Thank you;
David

Hi David

What type of XP CD came with the PC? You must have received something so as
to be able to restore your system.

No disk came with the computer. There is a partition on the hard drive that
has all the XP files.

David;
You need to contact HP if the recovery process fails.
The recovery process is setup by HP and they have the specifications.

I tried again and it says it needs the file hal.dll to be reinstall. If I
can get into the system and install the file into the
windows>\system32\hal.dll.

Thank you;
David
