This morning when I started up my PC I got the following
message:

Windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows
Setup ........etc

So I start the setup cd and it gives me various options to
either set-up XP, repair or quit. either of the options
takes me to a Blue screen STOP message, due to anti-virus
software I have installed.

I cannot get to a command prompt to disable the anti virus
software. Any ideas very much appreciated. Thanks

Hi

Try here:

"How to Recover from a Corrupted Registry That Prevents Windows XP from
Starting"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q307545

This may cure the BSOD. Can you remember what the Stop Code was with the
BSOD?
