256MB RAM is a bit low - it seems the optimum amount for XP is 512MB.......

I am experiencing the same slow down and my system has
512MB RAM. Opening and closing apps especially have a
noticeable lag.

If anyone has fixed this please respond.

Have you defragged? SP2 installation causes quite a bit of fragmentation.
Also clean out cache (Start/Control Panel/Performance and Maintenance/ Free
up space....

Mine runs ok once it's booted, but botting up takes twice
as long.

I'll do the defrag & clear cache as well see if that
help... cheers Peter

I wished booting took only twice as long. Running WinXP/Pro/SP2 on an IBM
A31P Laptop (P4/1.8GHz/512MB) it now takes me around 5 minutes!!! until i get
the login prompt. After that the initial load of the desktop is also slow.

Before installing SP2, i would have the login screen in less then a minute.

SP2 will replace a lot of system files; even if that doesn't
invalidate the prefetch data, it will skew the OS's sense of what
files are "most often used".

So a defrag straight after SP2 will help, but only partially.

After a few days of use, new prefetch data will be built to more
effectively guide Defrag in moving file content so that the files that
really are most often used, will load faster.

So a defrag a week after SP2 may help a lot more ;-)

In my case, I saw no adverse performance hit - but then, I build to
limit exposure to this factor! C: is under 8G and is FAT32, so no
matter how fragged it gets, the most-often-used files are always
within the first 7% head travel on this 120G HD.
