This is a weird one, but I'm hoping someone figured out a
workaround: the download and install went OK. I
restarted, as required, but there were no icons on the
desktop! Nothing to do but log out via alt/cntrl/del.
Here's the kicker - Other users on the same PC have no
problem (so far :)!
Does anyone have a suggestion to get the desktop back? As
we speak, i am waiting for MS Tech Suport Live Chat, but
have been waiting 45 min already (despite it saying only
a 1 minute 18 second wait).

Hi Eric,
I had the same problem, explore.exe in c:\windows is damaged. I did
still have [windows]+U key which and ctrl+alt+del . From these I found a
browser window. From there I browsed c:\ which opened an explorer like
interface in the browser then. serch for all explorer.exe files. You may
notice the icon on the one in the windwos folder looks strange. Take a good
explorer and run it you will get you desktop back. Then copy yhe good one
over the damaged one in c:\windows. I don't know how the
c:\windows\explorer.exe got damaged in the first place.

I would imagine there are many way to replace this. Just make sure you use
the 2004 version of explorer from the SP2.

Hope this helps,
I found in by messing around with the same problem.

Ken
