I installed XP SP2 last night and all went well until I
tried to use my AMR modem (PCCHIPS 810DLU 7.5a MB modem).
It was gone. Add new hardware does not find it. Any
ideas?

Hello

Well you can remove sp2 or look for more current drivers
for your modem from the mfg's website. Or just remove the
modem reboot your pc, shut down. Then re-install the modem
and lets see if XP will find it. If not locate the most current
drivers for your modem. I have notice that when some users
upgrade to sp2 they have some issue's and varies from pc
to pc, I suggest you wait until all the bugs are fixed with sp2
I mean why the big rush to install sp2.

Here's a good rule, if it ain't broke don't fix it

Service Pack 2 has been pretty well hammered out. It is highly
recommended to update as they aren't going to change anything from the
version they have now to the version they have in a couple of months.
They are still going to be the same Service Pack 2. The added security
of this Service Pack is vital especially considering how many computers
out there are still running XP Gold or SP1 not fully patched.

As for the modem, I would do as Alvin suggested. Remove everything you
can find about it from XP, turn off the PC, turn it back on and plug and
pray :)

That is a good rule "if it ain't broke don't fix it"
However you seem to be missing a large fact.
A computer without the necessary security updates is already broken
whether you notice it or not.

Also SP-2 today is the same SP-2 that will be here in a year.
There will not be any changes.
The only change in the 2 year life of SP-1 was the removal of
Microsoft Virtual Machine.
Tat change was necessitated to comply with a legal settlement with
Sun.
The version of SP-1 without MVM is called Service Pack 1a.

I had a similar problem when upgrading from ME to XP - I had to revert back
for a week before I bought a new modem. It was a Conexant internal modem, and
I found some "dodgy" drivers that allowed it to half work (it wouldn't turn
the speaker off once connected and was unreliable) but I decided not to
bother and just got the new one. Let's just hope someone makes new drivers
for your modem.
