XP SP2 Install Problems

I am been unable to install XP SP2. The first few times I
tried I received an "Access Denied" error. My system hung
on the SP2 removal wizard and I had to recover using the
recovery module (knowledge base article 875355). I was
still not able to complete step 4 because the computer
hung during the unistall process. Now it appears that
some of my applications may be SP2 and some are not.
Also, I can't open any attachments in Outlook express.

I went to Microsoft's knowledge base and changed some
permission settings in my registry. I scanned my computer
for viruses and adware. A friend gave me a CD with the XP
service pack. I tried to run it and I received "An
internal error has occurred".

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Yes, but you probably don't want to hear it. Went thru the same
machinations,"access denied" with update and a dl'd file on a CD.
Incidentally my system was working OK before trying the Windows Update
which also hung. I have good backups with Norton Ghost and Ntbackup on
an external drive, so bit the bullet and did a clean install and then
loaded the SP2 backup from a CD. Reinstalling old problems was a
chore, but one caveat is that you get rid of programs which had been
lying dormant.

BTW, I tried many "fixes" for the install problem, but none worked.

Good luck!
