XP SP2 How To Not Auto-Update Question

I use Auto Update with the automatic install feature switched on to ensure
that all of our PC's are kept up-to-date. I've read somewhere that its
possible to enter a registry key that will stop auto-update downloading SP2
but carry on loading other patches as normal. I need to stop SP2 being
auto-installed to give me more time to test it with our build.

Can someone tell me how to achieve this.

First of all, SP2 will not auto-install, regardless of your AU settings.
User must accept the EULA first.

Second, see...

Thanks PA Bear, but I should have been clearer with what I'm asking.
Currently all my PC's are setup to auto-download updates at 1pm in the
morning and then auto-install without bothering anyone, in particular, the
user!. I can appreciate that SP2 will not auto-install due to the EULA, but
I don't want it to download in the first place. I want it to completly
ignore the SP2 update and carry on as we are currently, ie. auto-downloading
and installing without user intervention at 1pm

I don't like giving my users the ability to choose whether to install
something or not. Better to leave it to full auto !!!

Microsoft supposedly has a Registry key that can be used to "Skip"
Service Pack 2 on Automatic Update machines. Probably need to
contact MS and inquire about it.

Hello Matt,
No, you cannot have both: have Automatic Updates ON (in some fashion) AND have it ignore SP2.
(If you are in a coporate setting & using SUS then repost. I do not know if they have some extra control mechanism).

XP SP2 is tagged as a critical update & as such, (for what you want) all that normal users can do is either turn off Automatic Updates, or as my very good buddy P A Bear suggests, reset A U to prompt.

Hi

But now you can have it both (at least for a while):

This won't answer your question, but you did confuse me:

1 p.m. in the "morning." I'm not familiar with that time zone or time
accounting. Everywhere in the world I've been 1 p.m. is in the
afternoon.

Oh, and you said this TWICE in this thread!
