XP SP2 gave me lots of problems

Looks like I'm not alone in this. My brand new PC froze
while rebooting after installing SP2. I had to do a
repair installation using the XP CD. Everything is
almost back to normal except that it now takes over 2
minutes to boot my PC when I turn it on. In Control
Panel, under Device Manager, something called a Microsoft
System Management BIOS Driver is missing. I tried
updating this driver using the XP CD and the motherboard
installation CD and failed with both. I tried contact
Microsoft Tech Support about this. They told me to get
the driver from the motherboard manufacturer, who told me
that this is a Microsoft problem.

Does anyone know what a BIOS driver is and where I might
get it to update my PC? Thanks in advance for any help
anybody can give. Please feel free to email me directly.

Hello Tony

Can I assume you have either a P4 with the Prescott core or a Celeron? Check
this:

http://cquirke.mvps.org/sp2intel.htm

Now, you did a repair install over a SP2 install which means that at the
moment, you are back to a non-SP2 installation (I am not sure tho if you
messed up things a little).

You should check your motherboard manufacturer's site for BIOS upgrades.
There is always a page where they have links to BIOS files for your existing
mobo. A few words about BIOSs:

http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/B/BIOS.html

You can always update existing BIOSs. Many mobos have in-built the tool that
updates the BIOS, in other cases you have to download the tool and run in
manually in DOS and in some others, you can run the tool directly from
Windows. You can access the BIOS settings right after you start your PC
(usually by pressing the 'Delete' button). Read the manual that came with
your mobo for more info.
