XP (SP2) and Firewall Alert Setting...

Hi... I can't figure out what is going on. I keep going into the new
security setting, clicking "change the way security center alerts me {or
something like that}" and UNchecking the box for "Alert me about the
Firewall {or something like that}". That gets rid of the annoying balloon
message. But ever day or few I get the balloon messages back and the
firewall alert checkbox has the check in it again (and, the point of course
is that I didn't go in and put the check back in there).

How does the Firewall alert check keep getting set back to CHecked? (I
haven't done any kind of restores).

Thanks,
Jeff.

Log in as AdministratorStart>Run>Regedit>Ok
Now navigate to the following key:-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center
The subkeys within are what change (either "0" or "1") when you change
your Alert settings within the Security Center.
A value of "1" engages the option, so to disable Firewall alerts, the
value should be "1".So change accordingly
Restart the machine.

Hi

Many have reported this problem in the newsgroups, it looks like
a bug in SP2.

Workaround:

If the "Change the Way Security Center Notifies Me" doesn't stick
when you reboot, or you want to disable the Security Center totally,
you can do the following:

Start/Run --> services.msc

Find "Security Center" in the list, double click on it, set
"Startup type" to Disabled.

Hi

That is the same registry values that the "Change the Way
Security Center Notifies Me" sets, and as the OP already had
tried that, I can't see how it will help to edit the values
with regedit.exe instead?
