Hi!
I recently uninstalled SP2 from my system. Since doing so, every time
I reboot my desktop icons (particularly my Recycle Bin) are replaced
with some generic icon that looks like a page. After every reboot I
have to go in to the Desktop Properties and change the icons back. Why
is this happening? And more important: how can I fix it once and for
all?
Thanks!!

No, not unless you don't get the "repair' offer (second repair, offered
After the EULA agreement.) If the system can't repair itself, you would need
a 'new installation' anyway, and yes, all apps would need reinstall., in
that case. At least you wouldn't lose your data.
