Hi,

I just got a new computer with windowsxp. I was under
the impression that xp contained Word. Was I wrong? I
can only seem to find works. Are works documents
compatable with Word docs?
Thanks

Windows XP, like every other version of Windows, does not include Word,
Office, or even Works. When you buy a new computer, the seller may include a
bundle of various pieces of software, but they don't have to do this at all
and they certainly don't have to include any particular item.

You'd need to check with the seller to see exactly what their bundle
includes.

Yes, you were wrong.

Neither Windows XP, nor any other version of Windows, has ever
come with Word or any other application software.

Word is a components of Microsoft Office, and can be obtained
either by buying Microsoft Office or buying it standalone.

If your previous computer, running Windows 9X, came with Word, it
wasn't because Windows 9X came with it, it was because the
company who sold it to you chose to bundle it (or Microsoft
Office) as part of the package it sold.

I
can only seem to find works.

The same is true of Works. That doesn't come with any version of
Windows either. If you have it, it's because your vendor bundled
it with the computer.
