*XP* so slow

I've regularly turned my computer off and on. This has been fine.

When-ever I turn the computer off and move it (regularly took it with me
when going out of town) it would run slow for a while when I turned it back
on. Today - I just moved it from one room to another and it has been slow
all day. The main hogging apps/services are:

system, svchost and explorer. sometimes even taskmgr. System Idle Process is
generally right at the bottom. I now when the system is running fine System
Idle process is well over 50%, even nearly 99% at times (without MSACCESS
running as even though access isn't processing task manager still shows the
idle process under MSACCESS and SYSTEM IDLE PROCESS is 0).

This could be caused by a few of the following reasons -

Windows xp needs at least 256mb ram - sdr or ddr - I
would use about 512mb just in case - sdr or ddr -
Could also be caused from a program in windows - worm ,
virus , spyware etc.
Windows xp also requires a half decent processor or else
it will run poorly , These are just a few reasons i can
think of , Try scanning at trendmicro.com use the online
virus scan , Also check for spyware using ad-aware. Sorry
if i could not help the greatest , Have a nice day.

Have 256Mb RAM. Was meant to add that I had already ran Ad-aware and Spybot
and Norton Internet Security is up to date. The PC with half as much RAM and
half the CPU speed runs fine after it's been on a few minutes but not this
one.

My system idle process is usually on 99 which is good. ie. the higer the
better for that.

Yes, as System Idle, means exactly that......

As for comparing the two systems, it all depends on running services and/or
programs running in the background. Start by checking
Start/Run/Msconfig/Startup and Services on both systems.

As for Norton, don't rely strictly on that, ever. And I know you mentioned
a couple of cleaner/checkers. However, it takes a certain combination at
times, to catch everything and this batch does that very well.

The only thing that has caused this problem is turning the computer off and
moving it to another room. Immediately prior to that the speed was OK.

The Pentium 300 128Mb 20Gb (HDD also about half the size and one of the
drives is only 5400RPM, whereas all the others are 7200RPM) is running the
same application and services. However the Pentium 300 is running extra
things like gearsec or something like that appears to be to do with iTunes.
Therefore I would expect a Pentium 766, 256Mb PC to run consistently faster
which it has done up until yesterday.

speed increased slightly. Renamed the computer (now have another computer
set-up as the main computer) and changed the IP address. Renaming the
computer brought the speed back to normal.
