XP slow to render links from tray or desktop onto screen

Has anyone experienced slow response of their computer ( mouse) to render
items back onto their screen, either from
the tray or from icons on the desktop. My Xp (home) seems to be doing it ,
especially after it sits idle for a while.
But once the program (either a browser or other) opens again on the screen I
can click it off or back onto the screen very (Fast). There seems to be no
excessive CPU usage as indicated by my task manager icon, however my (120
GB) hard drive light on my tower is on (searching).
My system is a HP Pavilion a320n with winXP 512MB running ZoneAlarm Suite
..
Could it be a simple setting in windows or ZoneAlarm?

Check to see what you have running in the background. It sounds like it
could be something like Office's Find Fast Indexer running.
