Rick

I have an HP with XP Pro installed (upgraded from (98 2nd
edition). When I do a full shutdown, it shuts off as it
should. After a period of time it partially starts back
up by itself. I can here it running and see some lights,
but I still have to push in the start button if I want it
to start up fully. To make sure it stays off I have to
unplug it from the wall. I appreciate your help!!!

Do you by any chance have a fax modem? Have you noticed whether the
telephone rings first and then the pc comes alive? If so it may be that you
have the wake on ring option set to 'on' in the bios

Hi, Rick.

Some motherboards (I don't know about HP) have a "wake on..." setting that
lets them be started automatically. The "wakeup" may be triggered by the
clock, by a phone call to the modem, or by some other event. If the HP
manual does not explain this, you may need to look in your BIOS for such
settings.

I think WinXP also can be set to restart on some setting that I haven't used
and can't recall. Perhaps a real guru will pop in here with that
information.
