basically my problem is that i accidently installed XP when i already
had a perfectly fine version of xp on my machine. every time i boot my
pc, a dos screen prompts me to select either 'Windows XP Professional'
or 'Windows XP Professional Setup'. is there any way which i can get
rid of this without reformatting my C drive?

thanks

Right click on My Computer and select Properties. Go to the Advanced
tab and click Settings under Startup and Recovery. Under System startup
make sure the Default operating system is Windows XP Professional. Then
click the Edit button. This will open your BOOT.ini file in notepad for
editing. Under the [operating systems] section remove the line that has
"Windows XP Professional Setup" in it. Save the file and close notepad.
Now when you start up it should boot straight into Windows XP.
