xp setup freezes

when upgrading from win98 to xp, setup stops during the
preinstallation phase. The timer counts down to about 84
minutes remaining then stops. the info screens to the
right continue to scoll along, but nothing else happens.
even after sitting all night it will not get any further.
any ideas?

I get to 50 minutes then get a blank screen even in a

clean boot. If you get any answers let me know.
