xp setup failes while checking hardwareconfiguration

Hi Everybody!

Please help me with this problem, it drives me mad:
I am running my pc with Windows 98 SE, but had xp already
on it. Xp was running fine. No problems running 98 too.
Now i am trying to install Windows Xp again on my pc. But
when trying this my computer always restarts when the setup
is checking my hardware configuration. As far as i can tell
the restart does not happen at any specific component of
the hardware configuration. The system doesn´t notify my of
any error too.
I have tryed the xp corporate version instead of
professional: same thing happens.

Pleeeaaaaaaaase help!

Didnt get ur point of running 98 SE and also running XP. Can u clarify that point.
are u dual booting or did u install xp on top of 98 earlier.

Hi M. Rajesh!

Thanks for taking interest in my little problem. I am gonna
try to clarify it.
I think the very beginning of this problem was when i
windows xp would work any more. In no mode (safe mode, last
working config. etc) i was able to get to my desktop. I
think the reason for this might have been that by mistake i
deleted some registry files with one of those antispyware
programs (not sure though!). I also could not reinstall xp,
because of the problems i described in my first post. Since
i had also various problems installing windows 98 (SE) on
that hard disk (i think due to different data formates
between xp and 98), i bought a completly new hard disk
(didn´t wanna formate, because i need the data on the first
hard disk).
So i tryed to install xp on my new hard disk, but the setup
always fails in the same way i already described. So
finally i installed windows 98 on the new hard disk to be
able to operate my computer. 98 works alright, but i still
can´t install xp.
Hope this isn´t too confusing for you. It´s become quite a
story meanwhile.
