I currently am running xp home sp1.
I have deleted all the uninstall files in my windows
directory.
All my sp2 hotfix's have disappeared from my add/remove
programs window.
When i do an xp update from microsoft, there are no
critical updates needed.

Have I deleted al my hotfixes or have i only deleted the
uninstall programs?
When microsoft check for updates, do they check the
windows directory or the registry?

Many thanks
Chris

Chris-

No worries they check the actual file versions for the presence of the
updated files, not the Add/Remove programs list.

Good Luck
PS

If you deleted just the uninstall files ($NTUninstall...$)
It is safe to delete those once you have determined you will no longer
need to uninstall them.
At that point, the uninstall option in Add/Remove Programs will either
go away or cease to function.
In that case, selecting it will cause a box asking if you wish to
delete the entry which is also good to do.
The fixes are still intact and doing their job.

As you wrote there were only unistaler

Windows Update checks registry and versions of the particular files
