I recently had to re-install XP-Pro on my Gateway laptop.
I was in the middle of doing the install of SP1 Express
when my system froze solid due to heat buildup. It had
finished the download and was doing the updates. It sat
there for over a day doing nothing and I eventually had to
turn it off. After several tries, I was finally get it to
boot to Windows and then had Gateway fix the thing with a
new heatsink. But now when I go to the Updates site to
run the SP1 again, I get errors. The SP1 installation log
says the following:

Service Pack started with following command line:
***

Access is denied.

***

Service Pack 1 installation did not complete.
***

I tried using the info at this site on the support page,
but it didn't help.

SP1 does not appear in the list of programs to unload so
now what?

if install window xp & do not delete the existing
partition something like this might happen
I did it

So are you saying that the only way to fix this is to re-
install XP and start fresh?

Did you have the sp1 update save your old settings first? Did you set a
restore point before starting the upgrade? If so, these might be two ways
to undo what was done, so you can try again.
