we've just loaded SP2 onto our home pc and it's wiped out
the identity for our outlook express - all folders and
addresses appear to have disappeared.

we can do a system restore to a week ago but i'm concerned
about why this is happening. can anyone help please?

You chose to ignore the warnings and not make a backup of your important
data, then you apply the single largest update to Windows Xp since it was
released, and you wonder why you might have lost some data?

The answer is that one should back up important data in the event that
something goes wrong... maybe it was because you were in your mail program
at the point of install.. there could be so many reasons.. this is why one
should back up stuff that is not easily replaced.. this advice has been
around for years, and still people don't listen or take note..

Granted. Backing up data is sound advice for everyone.
My objection was not so much to the response but the
manner in which it was presented.

It is difficult to suggest that it is the users fault for not doing the
basic task of backing up without appearing to be churlish or arrogant.. the
same dilemma presents itself when the problemee really needs to read the
manual.. how many different ways can that be said that sounds really
helpful, and yet it may well be the only way forwards.. I know of two.. RTM
and RTFM..

The other point in the OP is how to get back to pre-SP2.. if somebody
installed WordPerfect on their system but didn't like it, where would they
go to uninstall?.. add/remove programs maybe?.. so the problemee wants to
uninstall SP2.. wouldn't it be an idea to go look in add/remove programs?..
ya never know,it may just be there.. well hell, Windows XP Service Pack 2 is
listed.. that could save a multitude of problems allied to 'system
restore'..

Backing up (or saving) important stuff, reading/researching, using
add/remove programs, this is all basic stuff.. we really shouldn't be having
to tell people this.. some won't even take the simplest steps to help
themselves..

Sam;

I DO know the answer, but the OP seems to think that SP2 is at fault,
when his/her own practices were what caused the problem. I merely wanted to
make the OP *Think* about what happened...and realize that the loss of data
would not have been a problem had they simply done as Microsoft advised and
backed up *before* applying SP2.
